Meta Smart Glasses Review: A Hands-Free Peek Into the Future

By April Scott

I’ll admit it: I was skeptical about buying the Meta smart glasses. Would they really fit everyone with their one-size-fits-all design? Would they feel more gimmicky than useful? Still, curiosity got the better of me. I bit the bullet and joined the Amazon waitlist. A week later, I got a notification: I’d been approved for the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer in shiny black, with clear lenses.

And when they arrived, they didn’t disappoint.

First Impressions

The glasses came in a sleek charging case. As soon as I put them on, a soft set of musical tones greeted me. I tried the built-in assistant right away:

“Hey Meta, what’s the top news today?”
“Hey Meta, tell me a joke.”

The reply?
“Why couldn’t the bicycle stand up by itself? Because it was two tired.”

Okay… not the best. So I asked again: “Tell me the funniest joke you’ve ever heard.” This time, I got a clever one:
“A man walked into a library and asked the librarian: Do you have any books on Pavlov’s dogs and Schrödinger’s cat?”

It made me laugh — not bad for a pair of glasses.

Comfort and Fit

The Wayfarer shape is iconic, and while the smart tech makes them a bit bulkier than a standard pair of Ray-Bans, they still carry that classic look. On my small face, they feel a little loose, but not unwearable. They don’t slip off, and after a while I hardly noticed them. For everyday use, they’re comfortable enough.

Features That Shine

Right now, I’m still experimenting with ways to use them, but a few things already stand out:

  • Photos & Videos: A button on the right arm snaps a photo instantly. Hold it for a couple of seconds, and it records up to 3 minutes of video.
  • Hands-Free Creativity: The glasses sync seamlessly with my iPhone, making them perfect for POV product unboxings, hands-free tutorials, or even live streaming.
  • Streaming Potential: I’ve heard there’s no time limit on livestreaming directly to Instagram and Facebook — which I plan to test soon.

Where They Struggle

I tried making phone calls, but both people I spoke to complained that I sounded like I was in a tunnel. Audio quality may need improvement, or at least fine-tuning for different environments.

The Big Picture

All in all, I love these glasses. They’re not perfect — no first-generation device ever is — but they open the door to exciting new possibilities for creators. For me, the ability to record hands-free video content alone makes them worth it.

Maybe one day, these glasses will be like relics tucked away in a dusty attic — “Grandma’s old Meta specs,” sitting next to a selfie stick or a dusty PS4. Once cutting edge, later quaint reminders of how fast technology moves. We lived without them just fine, but that’s the thing about innovation: even if you ignore it, technology has a way of finding you, weaving itself into daily life until it feels indispensable.

And that’s what makes the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer smart glasses so exciting. They’re not just a novelty. They’re a glimpse of how we might all interact with the world tomorrow.
